Description
Margaret Steel (1888-1971) wore this dress many times and especially to concerts when evening dress was required. Even at the age of about 47 in 1935 she would have looked very attractive with her blue eyes and trim waist accentuated by the wide waistband, puffed raised sleeveheads and long gored skirt. The lace has cotton floral motifs accentuated by bright silky rayon threads adding depth to the design. The gown was probably made by a local dressmaker and has a matching slip. It is clear from a close look that the gown was worn many times as it is soiled at the back neck and has a few stains on the front. In many ways this adds to its special story.
