Description
Production of Maltese lace was revived by Lady Hamilton Chichester in 1833 as a means to give employment to Maltese women and children. The lace became very fashionable. This Maltese lace collar from about 1890-1910 was made in two separate strips with silk thread and bobbins on a pillow. The strips are neatly stitched together with floral motifs and wheatears forming the main part of the collar and maltese crosses, flowers and wheatears on the scalloped edge band. The collar fits a normal neck size and would lie flat across the shoulder. 19th century Maltese lace copies did not include the maltese cross motif. Very popular and fashionable, it would no doubt have been treasured and worn with pride by one of the Meroogal women.
