Caption
Canvas coin bag, Royal Sydney Mint, circa 1870
Description
This canvas bag was used for carrying coins minted at the Sydney Royal Mint (1855-1927), probably produced late nineteenth century (c1870). Coin bags such as this must have been mass produced for the Mint, for storing and transporting coins produced at the Mint. Upon purchase, this coin bag was located in California, USA and the vendor noted that he had purchased it at an estate auction sale a few years previously in Santa Cruz, California. How and why the bag arrived in California is unknown. Its location there may be related to the discovery of gold in California at about the same time as in NSW, with the gold rushes attracting migrants from around the world, or it may be simply coincidental.
