Description
Gold acid test kits such as this were in common usage in the late nineteenth century by gold prospectors and dealers to test the authenticity and quality of gold samples. These acid test kits may have been a popularised version of the some of the laboratory-based assaying processes carried out by trained chemists, such as those who worked on assaying gold samples at the Sydney Royal Mint (1855-1927), and made available for amateurs to test gold during and after the gold rush. Fiona Starr, 28 October 2012.
