Description
The design for the shirt in this paper pattern was taken from the convict shirt found on level 3 of the Hyde Park Barracks during restoration of the building in 1981, probably dating to c1840. The shirt was made from a coarse cream cotton fabric with an alternating wide narrow blue stripe. On the left front side, just below the side gusset is a reddish-brown stencilled broad arrow which is underneath the initials B.O. (Board of Ordinance – the authority which controlled the stores and provisions to convicts). It is the only intact example in Australia of the type of shirt issued to thousands of male convicts. This pattern was designed by Lindie Ward and produced by the Powerhouse Museum for the Australian Bicentenary in 1988, during its management of the Hyde Park Barracks Museum, and was presumably sold in the museum shop.
