Description
This gold melting crucible, 'Battersea Round' size H was manufactured by the Morgan Crucible company of Battersea, London, England. Between 1858 and 1908 Morgan supplied such crucibles to branches of the Royal Mint around the world, including the Sydney Royal Mint. Crucibles such as these were in use in the melting house at the Sydney Mint, and also used for refining the gold through the chlorine purification process developed at the Sydney Mint in 1867. This crucible was found at the gold mining fields near Portland, NSW. Fiona Starr, 28 Oct 2012
