Description
This small black and white photograph is one of a series taken by brothers Jack and Ernie Andersen while living at 64 Gloucester Street, The Rocks, part of a row of four houses called Susannah Place. The photograph captures the view looking east towards Circular Quay. In the foreground are buildings along Harrington Street and behind on the corner of George Street and Circular Quay is the look-out tower of the Metropotian Fire Station (No 3). In the distance sitting on the roof of the First and Last Hotel on Phillip Street are signs for Ovaltine and Penfolds. To the right of the hotel is the Farmers & Graziers building.
Arnt 'Martin', and Mary 'Girlie' Andersen and sons Jack and Ernie were tenants of No 64 from c1937 to 1949. The brothers owned a Kodak Box Brownie camera and were keen amateur photographers taking photos of their family, friends and neighbourhood.
By the late 1980s, the views to Sydney Harbour and beyond were obliterated with the construction of high-rise buildings behind Susannah Place.
