The Golden Wattle Cookery Book, tenth edition. Margaret A. Wylie, Perth, E.S Wigg & Son Ltd. 1948.
Description
The Golden Wattle Cookery Book was first published in Perth, Western Australia in 1924. Compiled by staff of the Education Department’s Household Management Centre under the direction of Margaret A. Wylie, the book was intended for use in schools. In 1925 it was advertised for broader distribution, its ‘good and tried recipes suitable for families with moderate incomes’ (The Western Australian, 2 October 1925 p7). This 10th edition of The Golden Wattle Cookery Book, published in 1948 belonged to Mary Pauline 'Girlie' Andersen. Girlie and her husband, Arnt Martinius 'Martin' Andersen, and children, Jack and Ernie, were long-term tenants of Susannah Place, a row of four houses in Gloucester Street, the Rocks. The Andersen’s lived at number 64 Gloucester Street from 1937 until 1949 when they moved into number 58 Gloucester Street, which was cheaper to rent. Over the years a number of clippings of recipes from newspapers and magazines and hand-typed recipes have been inserted into the pages of the cookbook. Girlie continued using this cookbook until her death in the mid-1960s.
