Description
In the early 1970s Des Howard was given permission by the Sydney Harbour Redevelopment Authority to set up his pottery workshop in the backyard and basement of number 60 Gloucester Street, The Rocks (part of a terrace called Susannah Place). Howard laid a large concrete slab over the uneven sandstone ledge in the backyard of No 60, to create a level base for his kiln and gas cycliners. He also erected makeshift structures to enclose the rear laundry area and repurposed the timber back steps as shelves for his pottery. Howard was a stallholder in the Argyle Arts Centre located in the historic Argyle Stores building on Arygle Street, The Rocks. The Arts Centre opened in 1970 showcasing various artisans and their wares.
Ellen Marshall who lived next door in No 62 recalled the loud noise made by the gas-fired kiln that was left to fire overnight. Howard gave Ellen a few of his pieces of pottery including this ashtray.
This item is part of a collection of personal objects belonging to former Susannah Place tenant Ellen Marshall, who lived at No. 62 from 1962-1990. Ellen and her husband Dennis were the last tenants of Susannah Place.
