Wallpaper, circular design, 1970s
Description
A wallpaper roll (one of two) with circle design: the circle was one of the most recognisable motifs in pattern design of the 1960s and remained popular until well into the 1970s. Circles were designed in a variety of ways: flattened, three-dimensional, cut into pieces, elongated and exploded. The circle, as well as the dome, sphere and disc, were also fashionable in architecture and employed for furniture and other furnishing designs in 1960s and 70s.

This is one of 165 different wallpapers (comprising full rolls, part-rolls and lengths) donated by specialist home furnishing retailers Chee Soon & Fitzgerald (CSF), a company at the vanguard of the wallpaper revival in Australia in the mid to late 1990s. Their promotion of wallpaper predates the revival of Florence Broadhurst's designs and came at a time when interior decoration was dominated by white walls and 'clean surfaces'. The wallpapers are of various places of manufacture and represent a period from 1950 to the 1980s. Approximately 40% of the collection was acquired by CSF from older Sydney interior designers including Mardi McIllvenney, Ann Gyngel, Barry Little and especially Robert Lloyd. The remainder, including this paper, came from markets, second-hand stores and private donors.
