Description
This object was transferred from the Elizabeth Bay House collection to the Vaucluse House collection. The transfer is intended to respect the available evidence for the fittings of both houses. The cast iron register grate is similar in style to the surviving original register grate in the Second Room at Vaucluse House. The principal ground floor rooms at Vaucluse House all contain register grates. This grate displaced a conventional c.1870 hob grate acquired by Clive Lucas for Vaucluse House c. 1980 and now recommended for deaccession.
At Elizabeth Bay House the upper floor rooms were all fitted with hob grates (as evidenced by surviving original grates in the morning room and one of the exhibition rooms).
