Description
Engraving after William Powell Frith A. R. A. titled ‘the Seamstress’ in original bird’s eye maple frame with gilt slip. It depicts a seated woman in an interior (with table, side chair and sewing implements) sewing the skirt of a white garment (possibly a wedding dress). The woman’s appearance is very much of the early 1840s, with hair centrally parted, with loose ringlets at the sides, white collar over dark bodice terminating with a ‘V’ shape and gathered-in upper sleeves. Her skirt is worn over full petticoats. A straw bonnet hangs from a coat rack in the upper left of the picture.
