Description
An Anglo-Indian micromosaic jewellery box, made in India in the Delhi trade in the first half of the nineteenth century c. 1820. The sandalwood box was purchased by the vendor in northern Tasmania and is in fairly original condition and mostly complete, with removable blue silk lined tray fashioned to hold items of women’s jewellery including bracelets and rings and light green (silk) lined lid. There is evidence of wear and tear consistent with reasonable use with some small pieces of lid decoration missing.
This modest, intricately decorated box significantly adds to the Principal Bedroom dressing table reflecting the passage from England to Australia of the Macleays and their continued association with India through their daughter Rosa Pooley Onslow. Objects of feminine toilette from the early nineteenth century are rarely available due to their repetitive daily use and age.
