Description
Soon after Artes Studio opened their first showroom at 222A Castlereagh Street Sydney, this textile was mentioned in a small piece that appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald for 11 December 1947: 'And how cleverly George Korody entwined Elsie Segeart's initials in the smoke rising from the peasant cottage printed on the Hungarian curtain material which he designed, and which is one of the most attractive cottons at their new Castlereagh Street shop.'
Korody used Central/Eastern European folk art for many of his textile designs in the late 1940s and early 50s before moving to more abstract geometric designs by about 1953.
It is also notable that the maker's name on the selvedge of this curtain is the singular 'Artes Studio' (and not 'Studios'). The singular 'Studio' appears to have been used in the early years of the company, though magazines of the period seem to alternate between the singular and plural.
This printed curtain was used in The Chalet, the home of noted Australian artist Nora Heysen (1911-2003), in the Sydney suburb of Hunters Hill. Heyson lived at The Chalet from 1954 until her death in late 2003. Although this fabric was designed around 1947, the curtain itself was probably made up around 1954 when Heysen moved into her Hunters Hill home.
The curtain, along with a number of other objects from The Chalet, were acquired by the Caroline Simpson Library & Research Collection in 2005. The Chalet was photographically recorded soon after Nora's death and prior to its sale.
