Description
'Port Jackson, NSW Government House, Fort Macquarie from the Botanical Gardens', 1847, by George Edwards Peacock. This oil painting shows the newly completed Government House and Fort Macquarie. The building of Government House commenced in 1837 and first occupied by Governor Gipps in 1845. It was designed by Edward Blore, Special Architect to King William IV and later Queen Victoria, under the supervision of the Colonial Architect, Mortimer Lewis.
