Cabinet from the Coining Factory buildings, the Royal Mint, Sydney, unknown maker, c1920, timber
Description
After the Royal Mint, Sydney closed in 1926 the buildings were used by a variety of government departments and law courts. When the Mint Offices building was converted to museum use in 1981, government departments / law courts continued to occupy the Coining Factory buildings. When the site was transferred to the Historic Houses Trust of NSW (later MHNSW) in 1998 this office cabinet was one of a few items of furniture remaining in the Coining Factory buildings. The form of the cabinet is that of furniture produced during the first half of the 20th Century and while it may have been in use in the buildings during the Royal Mint period, it was certainly part of the furntiure of the site during the government offices / law courts period. Given this, the cabinet has significance as one of a few objects to survive that are provenanced to the Royal Mint, Sydney and / or government offices period of occupancy of the buildings.
