Description
From 1915 honour rolls or boards began to be installed in town halls, schools, churches, sporting clubs, railway stations and in both public and private workplaces, recording the names of those who served in WWI. They not only honoured these men and women and served as a memorial; they also became 'scoreboards of commitment', a reflection of a town's or institution's patriotism (K. Inglis, Sacred Places: War Memorials in the Australian Landscape, 1999).
This honour roll records the names of the Sydney Mint staff who served in WWI. The roll has remained in the Mint offices building on Macquarie Street since it was first installed in c.1920. The Sydney Mint closed in 1926 and the honour roll has survived the many changes of use of the building. This reflects the continued respect for memorials relating to WWI, a mjor event in the history of Australia and this honour roll records the involvement of the Royal Mint, Sydney, through its staff, with this major event.
