Description
Captain Edward W. Ward (1823-1890) was the first Deputy Master of the Sydney Mint, the first overseas branch of the Royal Mint. Ward was responsible for the design of the buildings, the commissioning of machinery, staff and equipment and their shipment to Sydney. Later Ward also established the Melbourne Mint (in 1870). The pair ofcompasses were presented to Ward during his training at the Royal Academy, Woolwich, a reflection of his expertise in mathematics. Pair of compasses were part of the essential equipment of an officer of the Royal Engineers who were expected to prepare plans and specifications for buildings, fortifications and other engineering works in any part of the British Empire.
