Description
This plaster cast of an early 19th century female caryatid (female figure as pillar or column), has been styled in a combination of Greek and Egypto-Revival taste, evident in the detailing of Elizabeth Bay House (for example, the pylon shaped doorcases).
The figure is of Isis, the Egyptian goddess who resurrected her husband and conceived their son from his dead body. She was regarded as the great 'Mother Goddess' by the 1st century BC.
