Caption
Wallpaper fragment, 1890s
Description
Wallpaper designs of this kind with a tiled effect would typically have been used on a dado decoration, possibly in a high traffic area like a hall, although at the turn of the 20th century, deep red colours such as in this sample were also favoured in 'masculine' spaces like dining or billiard rooms.

One of six wallpaper samples found lining the drawer of an 1870s cabinet in a house in Waverley, Sydney. Each of the samples is of a similar size and has a number stamped of the back, indicating that they would have originally formed part of a wallpaper sample book.
