Description
This is one of a collection of over 40 wallpaper fragments retrieved from the walls of Neeves Cottage, a timber slab hut in Prospect, Sydney. The original four-room slab hut is believed to have been constructed in the early 1870s for the Neeves family. A fire in the kitchen around 1890 appears to have damaged part of the building, after which the building was repaired and also extended. All of the wallpapers in the collection date from after this extension. The cottage was purchased by the Commissioner for Main Roads in 1973 for purposes of road widening, and had lay derelict for some time before it was demolished in the 1990s. The wallpaper samples come from two of the original rooms of the cottage, both believed to have been living areas. This wallpaper was the 12th layer from the wall of some 26 different layers of wallpaper (plus lining paper) uncovered from the walls of one room (S4). This enormous number of papers appear to have been installed within about a 50 year period. Newspapers used as lining papers indicate that redecoration occurred in some cases on a yearly basis. A heritage study, conservation feasibility study and recording of demolition work, prepared by Clive Lucas, Stapleton and Partners for the Roads and Traffic Authority in 1991, is held in the Caroline Simpson Library.
