Description
This wallpaper has been varnished and has consequently yellowed and darkened with age. Varnishing wallpapers was standard practice in this period, usually carried out in situ by the decorator but sometimes purchased pre-varnished at extra cost. This made the paper more resistant to stains and easier to wipe down if marked. Varnishing wallpaper became particularly popular in a late 19th century society that was increasingly concerned with health and cleaniless issues in the home.

Used in a terrace house in Paddington, Sydney.
