Description
Elizabeth Bay House acquired a copy of a Dutch old master painting with funds supplied by Members who support the House. The work, The Fish Seller, an early 19th century copy after Hendrik Martenz Sorgh (1611-1670), hangs in the drawing room. The painting reflects the conventional taste of Alexander Macleay, the original owner of the house, who followed the style set by the Prince Regent, mixing Dutch old masters and Louis revival furniture.

The painting has its original Louis revival frame which is undergoing restoration. The work will add a significant level of interpretation of the Macleay period to the drawing room whose walls previously lacked a pointer to his decorative tastes.

Members also contributed to the purchase of a series of engravings of Alexander Macleay’s scientific and civil service contemporaries which hang in the library.
