Description
This Holland blind and valance were made from a woven Thai silk and were part of the interior design scheme in the bathroom of 88 Military Rd, Dover Heights, NSW. The interior design scheme was the work of the Sydney firm Marion Best Pty Ltd and the blind and valance evidence Best's use of Thai silk in Australian domestic furnishing schemes in the late 1950s.
The house was built in the 1930s for the Farren-Price family. It was then purchased by the Steen family in the 1950s and renovated by Sydney architect Neville Gruzman in 1956-7. In the following year, the interior decoration scheme was put together largely with furnishings supplied by Marion Best Pty Ltd. Many elements of the Marion Best scheme survived a later change of ownership to the Katz family.
The house was photographed shortly before it was sold in 1996, when a number of furnishings from the house were acquired by the Caroline Simpson Library & Research Collection. Along with this blind and valance, these include a moulded glass light fitting, ceramic door handle, wallpaper, temple blinds and curtain tie backs with tassels.
