Felt floor covering sample book, 'Art Felt', 1937
Description
A felt floor covering sample book containing 22 samples of felt in various single shades including red, blue, green, brown, grey and black. Felt floor covering began being advertised as 'Art Felt' or 'Art Squares' in the late 19th century. The large number of monchrome colours which were available appealed to the sensibilities of those devoted to the Aesthetic Movement. Art Felt continued to be available until around the early 1940s, though felt floor covering remained generally available until the 1960s. Feltex was the pre-eminent brand of felt floor covering in Australia between about the 1930s and the 1960s. During this period, other local and foreign manufacturers of felt supplied only small sections of the market. There are no identifiable markings to attribute this sample book to Feltex though the distributor of this collection, Robert Young Pty Ltd, also acted as the distributor of Feltex from around 1930.
