Holy water stoup, maker unknown, circa 1900, porcelain
Description
Designed for domestic use, this clear glazed porcelain holy water stoup measures 16cm x 8cm, and 4cm deep. Emulating larger versions found in churches, it features a relief figure depicting an angel, and decorative gilt line trim enhances its foliate edges and scalloped water bowl. Holy water vessels were often hung near the front door or in a bedroom for daily worship rituals in religious households.

Holy water fonts for the home could be bought from specialty stores or by mail order, along with crucifixes, rosary beads and prayer books. Holy water itself would need to be acquired from the local church.
