Caption
Binoculars, made by Jumelle Marine, France, circa 1910s, metal, glass and leather
Description
Made in France, this pair of binoculars (or field glasses) bears the brand name ‘JUMELLE / MARINE’ on the inner frame of the eyepieces, with two 4-point star motifs opposite each other between the words. The lenses and prisms are set within brass casings covered with leather handgrips which show considerable signs of wear, more-so on one side than the other. The brass has corroded in many places, with visible areas of Verdigris caused by oxidisation from exposure to air and moisture. The thumbwheel in the centre, secured by a steel screw, is used to adjust the focus, and the hoods over the lenses are extendable.
