Description
This colourful silk plaid in orange, lime green, purple and bottle green is part of a collection of unsold stock and fabric samples from the interior design firm of Marion Best Pty Ltd, Queen St Woollhara, NSW and dates to around 1970.
Marion Hall Best first imported silk furnishing fabrics from manufacturers such as Jim Thompson Thailand Silk in the 1950s and the vibrant colours and bold patterns attracted a great deal of attention in Australia at that time. The plaids were termed 'Kmit check' at the Best firm, after painter Michael Kmit(1910-1981). Kmit was a major influence on many Australian artists and designers during the 1950s, his style integrating stylised portraiture with geometric forms, patterns and vivid colours.
