Wallpaper part roll, 1950s-1960s
Description
This part roll of wallpaper is probably of US manufacture, as its width measures 18 inches rather than the usual English 21inches. The thin and now brittle quality of the paper and the fact that some of the colour dyes have run, indicates that this would have been a very cheap machine printed wallpaper.

One of over 60 unused wallpaper samples acquired at an Estate sale at Avondale, a house constructed in c1888 in Gladesville, Sydney. Most of the samples date from the 1950s and 60s, though a small number pre-date World War II. Amongst the wallpapers was found a receipt dated 1966 from Sydney retailer Mark Foys for 70 rolls of wallpaper. It is possible that some wallpapers in the collection date from this purchase, though many are clearly manufacturer's samples and not off-cuts.

Avondale was constructed around 1888 for solicitor Edwin Lumsdaine and wife Rose Florence Paterson, sister of Australian writer Banjo Paterson. The house was originally called 'Elanerne' and was built on a waterfront estate on Looking Glass Bay, across the water from 'Rockend', the 1830s sandstone cottage of Banjo and Florenceā€™s grandmother.
Avondale had a series of owners before being purchased by Alfred and Christina Knibbs in 1911, who refurbished the house in 1922 and remained in residence until 1942. The property was then owned by Norman and Elizabeth Churchill from 1942 to 1992. This and a number of soft furnishings, wallpapers etc in the Caroline Simpson Library & Research Collection come from the estate of the late Mrs E Churchill.
