Description
Playing with dolls was a favourite pastime for the Rouse girls, Nina (b1875) and Kathleen (b1878) in particular, who composed romantic stories around them. This tiny doll's wedding dress is finely made from silk satin and trimmed with machine made lace, artificial pearls and flowers. It fastens at the front with four brass hooks and hand worked eyes. It was made by a good seamstress, probably Mrs Cockram, evidenced by the intricate cut, lining, deft folds and pleats. The dress has a tiny fish tail effect at the back which sits over a large pleated bustle and trained skirt. It is typical of the styles of the 1880s.
