Description
This bright red cupboard, an old wardrobe fitted with timber shelves, belonged to the Marshall family who were the last tenants of number 62 Gloucester Street, the Rocks (part of a terrace called Susannah Place) . The cupboard sat alongside the fireplace, with its mantelpiece also painted the same colour.
Ellen and Dennis Marshall and Ellen’s daughter Jenni Whitford moved into Susannah Place in 1962 and despite initially only being offered a six month lease, Ellen set about brightening up the house. It is Ellen’s decorative touches that can still be seen today.
The Marshalls were great recyclers of furniture; repurposing, repainting and recovering pieces to give them a new lease of life or to jazz up inexpensive second-hand pieces. The red cupboard was used as kitchen cupboard until they moved out in 1990.
